"We know who we are. We’re misfits and mistakes, the least-wanted of the wannabes, our own greatest weaknesses."

From their headquarters in Griffin Tower, the New York Guardians do what they must to save the world - and in the basement of Griffin Tower are the Prospects, a team made from youngsters who have high hopes but practically useless powers. When one of the Guardians loses his armored exoskeleton, he finds himself responsible for training a cowardly speedster, a wind-blasting quitter, a manic brawler, a wise-cracking hacker, and the villainess who dealt him the most humiliating defeat of his career. But when the supervillains set aside their competing schemes to destroy the New York Guardians, the fate of the world will depend on the Prospects learning, the hard way, if they can find new ways to become super to themselves and heroes to the world.

UPDATE (2/8/15) I revised the book and removed many typos, which I'm embarrassed made it to the first edition.

The sequel is out! Check out The Prospects Nothing Poorer than Gods.

The Prospects eBook Daniel Halayko

I got through two chapters of this book and just can't continue reading it. This is supposedly the second edition where typos were fixed. If this is true, I'm afraid to know what the first edition is like. There are still glaring typos like using "Sargent" (which is a first name) with "Sergeant" (a military designation). If this happened just once or twice, I could forgive it. But when the author swaps between the correct spelling and the wrong word multiple times even in the same paragraph? No. The other issues that I just couldn't get past were things like not italicizing the names of publications. Again, the author is not consistent with this. He goes and lists about ten different publication names in two or three paragraphs without italicizing any of them. However, in the following paragraph he actually does italicize the name of a newspaper.

Other things that bugged me were just incorrect words being used. Example: he refers to a sensation of "frozen icepicks digging into his brain." Ice picks (two words) are not frozen. They are devices used to break up ice chunks. He describes a "new" exoskeleton suit has having a "musty" smell. "Musty" means something has a smell of being damp and moldy. Nothing new would smell that way. He describes a "gawky girl" having long "limps." Since he was just introducing the character and never mentioned that she had any physical problems, why would she be limping? One can suppose he meant "limbs" instead of "limps," but there's no frame of reference to really determine this. He describes the main character's clothing making noise (specifically his pants), yet then says that another character's actions break the silence. If the main characters clothes were making noise, it wasn't silent to begin with.

Some minor quibbles that still bothered me were things like spelling out "Mister" and "Saint" instead of using the more common abbreviations when the words are used as titles. He also tends to spell out numbers instead of using the standard usage of 1) when referencing one of the World Wars use Roman numerals instead of spelling it out (World War II instead of World War Two); 2) numbers over the value of ten are often displayed as numerals instead of words (99 instead of ninety-nine); and when giving a specific time you should use numbers and not words (10:00 a.m. instead of "ten a.m.").

I would normally submit a refund request since, to me, the book is just unreadable. However since I only paid 99 cents for it, I'll eat the cost as it's not really worth the effort to send that request in. I will say that I think the story has some potential, but there needs to be some serious proofing and editing before that potential can be reached.

The Prospects eBook Daniel Halayko Reviews

Most worldly nations passed strict laws that restricted what/where metahumans could do or go.
In the US Metahuman Accountability Bureau (MAB) were the overseers.
Agent Alexander Alex O’Farrell (Agent Exo, MAB, retired Navy SEAL) was in charge. His family consist of Emily O’Farrell (wife) & Calvin O’Farrell (2, Alex/Emily son).

There were also corrupt individuals & vigilante groups who took matters into their own hands. MAB dealt with them as well.
Metahuman Affairs Bureau had hired/trained numerous Agents. All of them were equipped with an exoskeleton.
Trista Gianni (codename Mind Dame, NY Prospect), Vijay Gupta (codename Asura, NY Prospect), Candilyn Wyznowsi (codename Zany, NY Prospect), & Jenny (American/Taiwanese, NY Prospect), were all new MAB trainees.
Alex devises Plan Failsafe.

Will the superheroes save the world from the villains?

I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A fairly well written super hero book. It wasn’t always very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish, but never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a huge set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great super hero movie, animated cartoon, or mini TV series. It was kind of cheesy for me. Older HS age geared. That said I will rate it at 3/5 stars.

Good superhero fiction requires a careful balance of elements. In The Prospects, Daniel Halayko treads a number of fine lines and comes down on the right side almost every time.
* The story has a good balance of slam-bang action and reasonable character interactions.
* The characters are smart and have reasonable motivations.
* The plot feels modern without being too cynical.
* The author is thoughtful about the super hero genre without being revisionist.
I look forward to reading Daniel Halayko's next offering.
Interesting concepts, great hero skill sets and powers, fascinating universe, all marred by absolute lack of any proofreading support for this author. Some of the dialogue is very well written and evokes a thoughtful reflection, and then you get error after error. Some sentences and sections require you to actually guess the intent of the structure, and it seems that in the midst of writing, the writer changed his mind about what tense or what perspective and yet left both versions in the final version that was put out for purchase. I bought both since they were only 99 cents, because I was interested in seeing where some of the characters went, but it is a struggle to wade through the bad editing.
This was a surprisingly good book, based on the summary I expected somewhat vanilla flavor book, but it was quite good. There are a few underlying themes such as courage, forgiveness, and what it means to be a hero that is interlaced in the POV dialogue from several characters throughout the book. The pacing of the book is good the action/ fight scenes are well placed and not added as a filler. There are a few twist and turns and surprises that unless you are really paying attention will give you a what the heck!!!! I didn't see that coming )
The only reason i did not give this a 5 star is the editing!!!!! For the author if you have not please get a few good people the word check for spelling and grammatical errors. There is nothing that throws off a reading experience like seeing a misspelt word or software replaced words that screws up the sentence or the paragraph.
